Speed (part 2)

It is more difficult to play slowly and with precision than most people realise. When you are practicing, try to avoid the temptation to be satisfied with one mediocre performance and then go faster and find that you get progressively worse as you speed up. That's the sound (and feeling) of how not to do it.

When you start on a new piece, or a new beat, pattern, exercise... be content to play it accurately; at whatever tempo that happens to be. Not all new ideas are complicated so it is not necessary to play everything slowly, but when the material is challenging it helps to remember that everyone would find it challenging; not just you! Be patient with your practice, and you will be surprised at how well you learn when you are practicing slowly, calmly and stress-free!!!

Groove on!
