Think Like a Pro (part 4)

Listen to the balance of your sound.

Learning to play beats is a multi-layered process. First we learn the note values that each voice is playing (bass, snare, hi-hat, etc)

Then we put it all together, so that we can execute the parts as a whole.
Then comes building tempo and groove.

This is where my tip comes into play. Your GROOVE is dependent on the balance that you can achieve between those different 'voices'.

Think of having a separate volume control on each arm and leg, 4 different sound sources. You might find that compared to your favourite drummer, your hi hat is way too loud, or that your bass drum lacks punch.

Learning to listen to yourself, other drummers (that you like) and then being able to make adjustments in your own playing is a big, big part of getting your own sound.

Groove on!
